Sarcasm, screenshots and the test ahead

Published 11 October 2026

On October 9, Scindia said the government did not allow monopolies and was technology agnostic. He described the aim as giving customers a choice of services and providers. Three companies had satellite licences, he said; spectrum would be assigned once the revenue-based charging system was decided, and operations could begin as each met the security conditions. His comments connected the remaining pricing and security steps rather than collapsing them into one clearance. They also supplied a ministerial answer to Musk's suggestion that one industrialist was deciding who could compete. That answer remained the government's assertion about its process, but it was anchored to the issued licences and the unresolved conditions already described by the ministry. newindianexpress.com, Musk escalates Ambani feud, shares reports alleging Reliance links to BJP campaign..., 2026-10-10

Scindia also criticized Congress for what he saw as inconsistent positions: first objecting to a person obtaining a licence, then aligning with that person over not obtaining one. The reference drew on the difference between the party's earlier response to the commercial partnerships and Gandhi's current exchange with Musk. It was a political rebuttal, not an answer to every question about network control or security. The minister said the pricing regime was close to a final decision, which still described something unfinished. An assurance that a decision was near was not the decision itself. The public argument now contained corporate accusation, opposition insinuation and ministerial criticism, all moving around a launch that remained conditional. newindianexpress.com, Musk escalates Ambani feud, shares reports alleging Reliance links to BJP campaign..., 2026-10-10 thehindu.com, Congress expresses concern over Airtel and Jio's partnership with Elon Musk's..., 2025-03-13 x.com, Rahul Gandhi post

At 10:33 that night, Musk addressed a longer post to "Prime Minister Ambani." He offered a sarcastic apology for failing to realize that Ambani was India's real boss and accused him of wanting to preserve monopolistic exploitation. He asked whether Ambani would nevertheless allow Starlink to compete. The title was mockery, not an official position held by the industrialist. The post made the alleged relationship between business power and government more explicit than the earlier reference to unnamed oligarchs. It still did not identify a document or action proving that relationship in the Starlink process. The accusation became more direct and more personal while its supporting administrative evidence did not become more detailed. x.com, Elon Musk post, October 9, 2026

Musk linked the request to children without educational access and small businesses unable to sell to a global market. These were the public benefits he said Starlink would bring. The argument shifted from the company's blocked entry to the opportunities he claimed were being denied to people. It was a powerful way to frame a service with a genuine ability to connect difficult locations. It also made a commercial operator the proposed remedy for a public problem. The benefit would depend on more than the existence of those opportunities. A terminal, an affordable service, functioning ground links and permission to operate would still be needed. The post supplied the promise; it did not supply an Indian retail offer or completed compliance results. x.com, Elon Musk post, October 9, 2026 pib.gov.in, Press Release Page, 2026-01-29 thehindu.com, Starlink confirms orders not live yet in India, calls pricing details shown on website..., 2025-12-08 pib.gov.in, Press Release Page, 2026-10-08

At 6:03 the next morning, Musk posted an image containing screenshots of two older reports. One was Al Jazeera's 2022 article about a Reliance-funded company and BJP promotion on a social platform. The other was an archived Indian Express report about Qwik Supply and electoral-bond donations. The captured X page labelled the image "Made with AI." The reports could be checked independently of the image, and their existence did not depend on accepting the screenshot as proof. The post extended Musk's argument from telecom regulation into the relationship between corporate money and politics. It offered headlines as a suggestion of influence, rather than a document connecting those older events to the remaining Starlink clearances. x.com, Elon Musk post with screenshot, October 10, 2026 newindianexpress.com, Musk escalates Ambani feud, shares reports alleging Reliance links to BJP campaign..., 2026-10-10

The Al Jazeera report, written by members of The Reporters' Collective and ad.watch, was background now being recirculated, not a new event in the satellite process. It alleged that NEWJ used news-like material as paid political promotion benefiting the BJP. The analysis covered more than half a million political advertisements from February 2019 through November 2020, and the report attributed its data to the platform's ad library. It described NEWJ as funded through Reliance-group investment. Those were findings and allegations in a media study of advertising, not a telecom-regulatory order. Their relevance to Musk's October post was that he chose to circulate them as part of his argument about business and political power. theprint.in, Al Jazeera claims FB ran 'surrogate ads' to help BJP in 2019. Jio-funded news site..., 2022-03-16 aljazeera.com, How a Reliance-funded firm boosts BJP's campaigns on Facebook, 2022-03-14

The responses were part of that older record too. Meta said it applied policies uniformly regardless of political position or party affiliation and denied that enforcement against coordinated inauthentic behaviour had stopped. NEWJ chief executive Shalabh Upadhyay rejected the allegations, described the outlet as independent and pointed to coverage of Congress figures as well. The headline Musk circulated omitted those responses, which remained part of the older dispute. The controversy concerned how paid political content was produced and handled on a platform. Neither the allegations nor the denials established who controlled India's satellite-security assessments. They belong to the context of the screenshot, with their own subjects, dates and disputed claims. aljazeera.com, How a Reliance-funded firm boosts BJP's campaigns on Facebook, 2022-03-14 theprint.in, Al Jazeera claims FB ran 'surrogate ads' to help BJP in 2019. The Qwik story also required its own qualifications. Reuters had reported in March 2024 that regulatory filings linked the company to Reliance-group entities and that it bought electoral bonds. Reliance's response was that Qwik was not a subsidiary of any Reliance entity. The denial was narrower than saying there were no associations, but it was still essential to the account. A corporate link, a subsidiary relationship and a political donation are distinct claims. The original reporting discussed them with evidence and responses; a compressed screenshot could make them appear to be one accusation. Reading the sources separately keeps the categories intact and avoids treating a company's name near another company's name as proof of every relationship alleged. reuters.com, Qwik, a top buyer of Indian electoral bonds, is affiliated to Ambani's Reliance,..., 2024-03-15

The archived Indian Express page introduced a further problem with the number. Its headline said Qwik gave 385 crore rupees to the BJP and twenty-five crore to Shiv Sena. A sentence in the body instead said 395 crore to the BJP, while another described a total of 410 crore with all but twenty-five going to the BJP. Those statements do not agree. The headline visible in Musk's image can be described as the headline he circulated, but the inconsistency prevents it from being silently upgraded to a verified donation total. A precise claim about political money needs a consistent underlying record, not merely a widely shared screenshot. preprod.indianexpress.com, Reliance-linked Qwik Supply gave Rs 385 cr to BJP, Rs 25 cr to Shiv Sena, 2024-03-21 newindianexpress.com, Musk escalates Ambani feud, shares reports alleging Reliance links to BJP campaign..., 2026-10-10

The screenshot post supplied no link between a donation and a particular Starlink decision. It implied that the older reports supported Musk's broader claim about political influence. That implication was not evidence of causation. The public record contained a delayed service, earlier corporate lobbying over spectrum, issued licences, a continuing security process and disputed media reports about other conduct. Those facts could be examined together without asserting a transaction the sources did not establish. The distinction is especially important when a business rivalry enters electoral politics. A reported association or donation may raise questions about influence, but answering those questions requires evidence of the decision and the connection, not only proof that money or an association existed. x.com, Elon Musk post with screenshot, October 10, 2026 newindianexpress.com, Musk escalates Ambani feud, shares reports alleging Reliance links to BJP campaign..., 2026-10-10 pib.gov.in, Press Release Page, 2026-10-08 reuters.com, Ambani's Reliance lobbies India on satellite spectrum in new face-off with Musk, 2024-10-13 reuters.com, Qwik, a top buyer of Indian electoral bonds, is affiliated to Ambani's Reliance,..., 2024-03-15

For a customer, the decisive outcome would be a connection that could be obtained and used under clear terms. Twenty gateways, a sovereign plan, a service licence and a viral accusation all described parts of the contest, but none alone was that outcome. India's choice was not exhausted by preferring Musk or Ambani. It involved whether several providers could operate under workable rules, whether difficult locations received service, and whether the equipment and subscription were affordable to the people meant to benefit. A low-orbit satellite could cross a border. Making a communications service cross from ambition into daily use required a ground system, permission and a customer able to reach it. theprint.in, Starlink built India operations, Indian user data to stay in country, 2026-10-07 pib.gov.in, Press Release Page, 2026-10-08 ril.com, 49th AGM transcript, 2026 trai.gov.in, TRAI recommendations, May 2025 3gpp.org, Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN)
